MLT Moonshine Trail Race 2025

The MLT Moonshine Trail Race 2025, held on Saturday 15th February, was a fantastic success, bringing together 442 participants from Southland, Otago, Canterbury, America, and England for a day of active recreation in the stunning Dolamore Park and Croydon Bush Scenic Reserve. The event, supported by the Hokonui Mountain Bike Club, featured nine events, including two exciting new additions: the 2km family bike and the 12km mountain bike race, both offering participants a chance to explore new trails in the area. Thanks to the Hokonui Hauora Fund, a free shuttle bus was provided from Mataura and Gore to increase youth participation, and plans are in place to incorporate it into the new rangatahi programme in Mataura for next year. The event achieved a number of key outcomes, including promoting physical activity, increasing community participation, and fostering a sense of togetherness, with 159 first-time participants and 71 new participants from the MLT area. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the great atmosphere, the accessibility of the event, and the chance to connect with the beautiful natural environment. The event also supported the work of the Hokonui Trails Trust, with new races showcasing the trails they’ve developed. The sense of community was strong, with people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds coming together to enjoy a day of active recreation and fun.
