Holiday Roller Disco

Rollerskating made its debut in Gore in December 2024, with locals embracing the sport at the Mataura Licensing Trust (MLT) Multisports Centre, thanks to the efforts of Southern Most Skaters and funding from Hokonui Hauora. The Holiday Roller Disco event welcomed both experienced rollerskaters and beginners, offering them the opportunity to try the sport with all the necessary equipment, including skates and safety gear. The funding from Hokonui Hauora specifically supported the provision of skates, safety gear, and coaching, ensuring that everyone could participate safely and comfortably. Coaches were on hand to provide guidance, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

The event was a huge success, with many attendees, like 11-year-old Jonathon Bennett, giving rollerskating a go for the first time. Jonathon, initially nervous about the prospect of falling, soon found his confidence with the help of professional coaches, learning new tricks and mastering the basics. Reflecting on his experience, Jonathon was eager to skate again, underscoring the positive impact of the event. According to Southern Most Skater Rebecca Herzig, the resurgence of rollerskating has brought a supportive and fun environment for all skill levels. The event was designed to give beginners the best start, equipping them with the right tools and advice for success. With a focus on personal milestones and fitness, it’s clear that rollerskating is back in a big way, and the Southern Most Skaters team hopes to continue fostering this passion in the future.
